SISU and two relegations

SISU are the current owners of Coventry City, Sisu Capital Limited is the full name of the company. Not much is know about SISU, they are an investment company.

SISU came to buy Coventry City when City were 30 minutes from going into administration in December 2007. Former footballer Ray Ranson helped SISU take over Coventry, Two months before Ranson with SISU attempted to take over Southampton football club.

At the time of the takeover Coventry were in the Championship, in 2012 they were relegated to League 1, the first time in the third tier since the 1960’s.

The real problems arose when the club stopped paying rent to Arena Coventry Limited (ACL) (own the Ricoh Arena). In August 2012 club were taken to the high court in Birmingham after they stopped paying the £100,000 rent.

Next year in February 2013 ACL had the clubs bank accounts frozen, at this point they had not paid 11 month rent, totaling £1.3 million.

Next month in March the non-operating subsidiary of the club was placed in Administration a day before a court case between ACL and the owners was due to happen at the high court in London.

August 2013 – At this point, it gets a little messy, the club is placed into admin and lose 10 points as part of league rules. They are then forced to move out of the Ricoh Arena and have to play home games at Northampton 34 miles from the Ricoh. More detail over at

The club plays the entire 2013–14 season at the Sixfield Stadium in Northampton finishing in 18th position in League One.

A deal is agreed to move back to the Ricoh Arena for two years,

Protests now start to increase, with big protests again Charlton Athletic and Sheffield United. In 2015–16 City do well in the League under manager Tony Mowbray and finish 8th.

Next season doesn’t go as well, they finish second bottom and are relegated to the bottom tier of the league for the first time since 1959.

At the time of writing Coventry are due to move out of the Ricoh Arena in August 2018.  One possibility is a redevelopment of Butts Park Arena with Coventry Rugby Club.
